Lucas’ treatment story at the Thompson Autism Center at CHOC
Lucas began having trouble focusing in school and acting disruptive when he was 10 years old. That’s when he was referred to the Thompson Autism Center at CHOC (TACC) for treatment of these disruptive behaviors caused by autism spectrum disorder. Autistic individuals can struggle with sensory hypersensitivity and perceptual differences that are not understood by people without ASD. So, to help people better recognize the experience of someone with ASD, in 2017, The Guardian worked with researchers and autistic individuals to build a virtual reality film called “The Party.” In this film, viewers undergo various sensory feelings an autistic person might experience during day-to-day life.
